Stock kitchen cabinets are manufactured in fixed widths — typically three-inch increments. Your kitchen walls were not built in three-inch increments. That gap between the two is the whole story.
When a run of stock cabinets doesn't quite reach the wall, the installer closes the difference with a filler strip: a flat piece of matching material screwed into the gap. One filler strip is unremarkable. Four of them across a kitchen, plus a corner where a cabinet door can't fully open because it hits the one beside it, is what makes a new kitchen feel subtly wrong without the homeowner being able to say why.
Custom cabinetry starts from the opposite direction. We measure your kitchen on site — every wall, every out-of-square corner, the exact ceiling height — and build to those numbers. The run reaches the wall because it was built to reach the wall.
The practical gain is storage. Reclaiming two or three inches on several cabinet runs, using full ceiling height instead of stopping short and leaving a dust shelf above, and building a pantry to fit the actual alcove rather than the nearest stock size adds up to real, usable space in a kitchen that hasn't grown by a single square foot.
There's a real cost difference and we won't pretend otherwise. Custom cabinetry is a larger investment than stock. But it is usually a smaller gap than people expect once you account for the fillers, trim, and modifications a stock installation needs anyway to look finished.
Our recommendation is straightforward: if your kitchen is a simple rectangle with square corners and standard ceilings, stock cabinets will serve you well. If it has angles, an island, unusual ceiling height, or awkward alcoves, custom will fit better and hold more.
